Bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas are more than 70 species that cause infections in both humans and animals. The most common is the Pseudomonas aeruginosa microorganism , which is related to frequent infections in the hospital and opportunistic infections in patients with compromised immunity.
Bacteria are Gram-negative and have a highly mobile whip (monothy) to facilitate their movement. In addition, the body is provided with files that are related to better attachment to the lining of different organs. The micro-organism is extremely adaptable and resistant to the environment, preferring a damp environment.
Typical of pseudomonas is that they synthesize a number of enzymes and toxins that help protect cells from the immune system and facilitate entry into various tissues.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is among the most resistant bacteria. In hospital conditions it spreads with the secretions of the sick, and after the drying up of the various excretions, it remains long-lasting. Because of the widespread use of antibiotics, strains of the micro-organism have developed marked resistance against a broad range of antibiotics.
The micro-organism can be isolated from various places and objects - catheters, sinks, air ducts and ventilation systems, endoscopes, soaps, towels, contact lenses , including flowers.
Apart from antibiotic treatment, the microorganism is also resistant to a number of disinfectants.
In incineration compartments Pseudomonas aeruginosa is up to 30% of all infections. Widespread in the environment, it is also part of the normal microflora of the skin and the colon.
In general, the micro-organism is isolated from urinary tract infections, local wound infections, bronchial secretion of cystic fibrosis patients as well as septic patients.
In cystic fibrosis, the micro-organism causes necrotizing pneumonia, which often terminates lethally. Urinary infections are mainly a result of a previous catheterization.
Diagnosis is mainly based on a microbiological study of blood material (for hemocultures), pus, wound secretions , trachea secretions, conjunctiva, ear and other organs, depending on the location.
The micro-organism is non-exigent to nutrient media and an indicative result is obtained within 24 hours.
