Mouth cancer

The incidence of mouth cancer or oral cancer in Spain is approximately 6 to 13 cases per 100,000 men / year and 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 women / year.

Almost all mouth cancers appear in pavenous cells, which line the mouth and oropharynx. It is what is known as squamous cell carcinomas.

The mouth cancer arises most often in the tongue, floor of the mouth and lips. It can also start in the gums, the teeth, the salivary glands, the lining of the lips and cheeks, the palate and behind the wisdom teeth.

The cancer of the oropharynx, also known as cancer oropharyngeal, begins in the immediate post mouth (oropharynx) area but may also arise in the back of the tongue, the back of the mouth and uvula, tonsils and back and the side walls of the throat.

More than half of the cases are diagnosed when the cancer has spread to other regions of the body. The chances of successful treatment of oral cancers are highest when they are detected early.
