THE WORLD’S OLDEST SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM SELECTS STUDENTS FOR POST-GRADUATE STUDIES IN OXFORD

The Rhodes scholarship program is among the most prestigious in the world. Created in 1902, the initiative served as the basis for other scholarships – such as Fulbright and Cambridge Gates scholarships – and it also emerged in the British Empire.

However, this is the first time Rhodes scholarships open for entries from around the world. In all, there will be 100 people selected and two specific vacancies for those who come from regions not previously contemplated – as is the case in Brazil. To apply, you must submit your application by the deadline of June 30.

How the Rhodes Handbag Program Works

The financial support generated is for postgraduate students at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Full-time institution programs are eligible, which may last for up to three years. To participate, students must be between 18 and 24 years old and already has a diploma degree.

Candidates must demonstrate excellent academic performance, excellence in their activities and field of endeavor, leadership characteristics and concern in helping others. As fellows, the chosen ones receive financial support for maintenance in the UK and tuition, as well as round-trip tickets to Oxford.

In addition, networking opportunities, workshops and conferences are part of the initiative, as well as networking with more than 5,000 leaders.

How is the selection process of the Rhodes Bags?

In the case of the “Global” category – of which Brazil is a part – the process requires a Brazilian university to name the student interested in the Rhodes scholarships. A representative of the educational institution then must email the student’s information such as name, nationality and contact information. It is worth remembering that each university has the right to appoint up to three young people and must do so by the deadline of June 30.

From there, it is up to the Brazilian interested in the initiative to continue the candidacy. The process includes proof of proficiency in English, letters of recommendation (at least four of them, three of which must come from teachers) and a personal statement. The documents must be submitted no later than September 30, three months after the student’s appointment by his home university. There is also a second stage to be completed: a round of interviews with Rhodes leaders and alumni.

By the approval of the Rhodes program in hand, the students make the application for the course of interest in Oxford. Again, you need to submit your academic history, personal statement, and meet specific course requirements (for example, a TOEFL or IELTS score). Only with a place guaranteed at the university, then, it is possible to obtain the scholarship, which is valid for 2019-2020.
