How the process works through this step-by-step plan:
1. Enter data in comparator
The first step in taking out car insurance is to fill in the data. The comparator asks you for your registration number, date of birth, postcode and house number, and claim-free years. When you have filled in these details, you will be redirected to a more extensive form. The received data are already filled in for you. You are asked here for a kind of cover,
For a car you can take out three types of insurance, namely a third party liability insurance, a limited liability insurance or a full liability insurance (all risk).
Liability insurance
If you are in possession of a car, you are obliged to take out at least a third party liability insurance. WA means Legal Liability and means that you can be held liable for the costs of damage that you cause to someone else. This insurance only covers this kind of damage and is often the cheapest.
WA Limited Casco
This insurance covers all damage caused by someone else, and also a number of damage causes such as window damage, theft and damage due to extreme weather conditions.
WA Full Casco
This insurance is the most comprehensive type of insurance. These insurance policies cover the damage that you cause to others, but also damage that is done to you and damage that you cause in yourself through your own fault. Every insurer does have a number of exceptions. These exceptions vary per insurer, so read the policy conditions carefully.
2. Compare options
The comparator has made a ranking based on your data and preferences with the insurance that best suits this. The results are assessed on the premium amount, the level of the deductible and the policy reasons of the insurance. You can compare these different insurance policies with each other. This gives you a clear overview of the differences and similarities between the insurance policies and allows you to make an informed choice.
3. Checking the notice period
Before you take out insurance, you must be sure that your contract duration has already expired, so that you can cancel your old insurance policy. Many insurers use a different notice period and contract duration, so read this carefully in the policy conditions.
4. Choose additional product
When you have chosen insurance, you can choose to purchase additional modules so that you are more fully insured. However, these additional insurance policies are not mandatory. Often you can choose from the following modules:
Non-life insurance / accident occupants
This insurance covers the damage to the drivers of the driver after an accident. This includes damage to the person, clothing and property of that person who were present in the car during the accident. If a passenger dies or is seriously injured during the accident, a fixed amount will be paid.
Legal counsel
This additional insurance reimburses legal assistance that you need when recovering damages from the counterparty.
No claim protector
This insurance protects you against the rise of your premium when you claim damage. If you have taken out this insurance, you can claim a claim once a year without your premium going up.
Breakdown assistance in the Netherlands / abroad
This additional module covers costs for accidental assistance to your car. A distinction is often made between a module for the Netherlands and abroad.
5. Provisional coverage
When you have entered all your details and you have selected (additional) coverages, the request is sent to the insurer. Then you have to wait until the insurer accepts you as an insured. Sometimes this happens immediately, but it can also take a longer time.
In the time between the application and the confirmation you will receive a provisional cover from Verzekering.nl. This means that in the meantime you can simply drive in your car.
If you have claimed a lot of damage in the past or have not paid your premium properly, an insurer can refuse you. If this is the case, you can apply for a new insurance with another insurer.
6. Cancel
When you have chosen insurance, you must cancel your other insurance policy (if you have one). You must take into account a notice period of your old insurance. Most insurers use a month's notice period after the first year. You can cancel your insurance policy in various ways.
Registered letter
If you have to write down your insurance, you can choose to send this as a registered letter. This means that the letter can only be received personally by the person for whom it is intended. The recipient must also sign for this. This way you can be sure that your letter of cancellation has actually been received and that the insurer must therefore implement your cancellation.
